The format of the Open Innovation Day is defined by DSP Valley and its partners of the Silicon Europe Alliance. People from all over the world participate. What better place to host the event than Health House, the experience center in Leuven that shows the impact of technology on the healthcare of the future? Theme of the day: smart medical devices.

9 timeslots, 20 technology challenges

A short welcoming by Peter Simkens of DSP Valley was followed by some guidance from Jonathan Goldstein, Director Corporate R&D Venture at Boston Scientific (BSC) on how to start a cooperation with BSC. After these introductory speeches research organizations (imec, VTT, Fraunhofer, Joanneum Research) as well as a few industrial companies (NXP, Valtronic, EASii IC) presented a selection of their technologies for medical devices and of general interest to all participants. A most important part of the day was the 1-on-1 B2B matchmaking meetings: each participant had 9 generous timeslots – 25 minutes each – at least three with BSC experts, many of whom had previously presented technology challenges to these European companies. A great opportunity for all!

During the 1-on-1 B2B matchmaking meetings each participant had at least three timeslots with Boston Scientific experts.

Boston Scientific technology challenges

BSC had provided seven well described challenges in the following domains:

  • Fiber optics
  • Miniaturization of electronics and the electronics packaging
  • Microfluidics
  • Ultrasound technologies
  • IoT applied to smart packaging & supply chain management
  • Systematic firmware development for medical devices
  • Energy technologies
High tech companies from all over the world

The Open Innovation Day was strongly supported by the cluster partners of the Silicon Europe Alliance. On top of the local participants from the DSP Valley cluster, the Silicon Europe cluster partners helped in recruiting international participants. The international group of high tech companies included members  from BC Semi (the Netherlands), Distretto G&HT Monza Brianza (Italy), Midas (Ireland), Minalogic and SCS (France), Silicon Alps (Austria) and Silicon Saxony (Germany). Other participants came from Lithuania, Switzerland and the United States.

A visit to imec and Health House

Boston Scientific Health HousePrior to the Open Innovation Day, DSP Valley had organized a tour at Health House and imec facilities for the BSC delegation providing an excellent insight in the regional strengths. The event involved all strategic partners of the Health House: imec, KU Leuven, UZ Leuven, the City of Leuven and the Province of Vlaams-Brabant. It was also supported by the EFRD funded project “Internationalization in Medtech, Biotech and Regmed”. The tours at imec and HealthHouse were concluded with a walking dinner at Health House, combined with a KU Leuven presentation about its medical technology related research.
